DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for transmitting work orders and for performing clerical work to assist the function of work crews. The work is carried out in accordance with established procedures with leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in applying policies to unusual situations. Duties also involve telephone contact with consumers requiring the tactful treatment of a variety of complaints. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Distribution Engineer, General Crew Chief- Water Maintenance or the Senior Dispatcher. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of maintenance and service operations; good knowledge of the geography and territory of the areas served; working knowledge of computers and their applications, including GIS (Geographical Information System); ability to read and understand mapping systems; good knowledge of the techniques of telephone courtesy; working knowledge of office terminology and procedures; ability to read and interpret construction drawings and details; ability to courteously receive consumer complaints and explain services rendered in accordance with policy; ability to maintain accurate records and files; ability to determine and evaluate facts from sketchy descriptions; ability to get along well with others; ability to follow oral and written directions; clerical aptitude; good judgment; tact; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and
A. Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance or service phases of a water distribution system; or:
B. Two (2) years of experience performing the duties of a dispatcher; or:
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
