BUFFALO, NEW YORK - The Erie County Water Authority (ECWA) is starting phase one construction to investigate and replace lead water service line materials on several streets throughout the city of Tonawanda, the work will begin in mid-May and is scheduled to be finished by the end of November.
The streets that will be impacted include: Adam Street, Bouck Street, Broad Street, Catherine Street, Clinton Street, Court Street, Elmwood Park East/North/South West, Enterprise Street, Erie Street, Fletcher Street, Gibson Street, Grand Avenue, Grove Street, Hill Place, Hill Street, Hines Street, James Street, Johnson Street, Klinger Avenue, Kohler Street, Main Street, Morgan Street, Schuler Avenue, Seymour Street, Wheeler Street, and William Street.
The site work is part of ECWA’s Get the Lead Out Program, mandated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The mandate requires ECWA and all public and private water utilities to remove lead material service lines by 2037 to mitigate any lead exposure from drinking water.
ECWA will identify the existing service line material and if identified as lead will replace the service line from the existing water line in the street to the curb box and/or replace the service line from the curb box to the existing meter inside the home or business. If service line replacement is required, ECWA will replace the water service line at no cost to the homeowner.
Through the Get the Lead Out Program, ECWA is asking customers to assist in identifying their service line material as lead, copper, or galvanized steel. For more information and to self-report the material of your service line, please visit https://my.ecwa.org/leadcopper.
