TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises and participates in the repairs and adjustments to motor equipment such as cars, buses, trucks and other off the road equipment;
Supervises the general maintenance and daily servicing of motor equipment including gassing, lubricating, changing of tires, checking of oil, battery and tire pressure, cleaning and polishing equipment;
Supervises through inspections and may assist a mechanic in the installation and repair of hydraulic controls and in the removal, tearing down, repair, rebuilding and replacement of all types of gasoline and diesel engines;
Assigns, inspects and makes a final check of the work of automotive mechanics in the general repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel engines, and small engine equipment, such as lawn mowers, chain saws, etc.
Inspects equipment, diagnoses the cause of equipment failure and malfunction and makes decisions to repair, replace or rebuild parts;
Instructs and may assist the mechanics in the replacement and repair of transmissions, differentials, rear axle assemblies, radiators and automotive electric work by offering suggestions as to methods of repair, assisting in difficult repairs or with unusual problems;
Operates various power and hand equipment and testing devices including drills, lathes, polishers, sanders, welding equipment, battery chargers and other devises for repairing and testing automotive equipment;
Performs master mechanic work on all types of equipment;
Supervises and may perform body work, fabricating and paint work;
Requisitions parts, gasoline, oil, grease, etc. by listing the item(s) needed, quantify, part numbers, a brief description of the item(s) needed;
Maintains accurate records concerning inventory and maintenance via computerized programs and/or other acceptable accounting methods;
Maintains a record of repair work that is requested and completed;
Maintains daily time sheets or cards on all assigned departmental employees and keeps a record of the employees personal time;
Maintains records on automotive equipment and supplies;
Instructs workers in mechanical and maintenance repairs, and inspects work, test-drives equipment for conformance with mechanical standards;
Maintains the garage by making sure the work area is clean and orderly, that the tools and equipment are used properly and maintained in safe working condition;
Submits annual budget requests for all materials and equipment that is needed;
Drives vehicles when required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of the automotive mechanics trade; thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines; thorough knowledge of the repair and maintenance characteristics and servicing of a variety of automotive equipment; thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the automotive mechanics trade; ability to repair and overhaul motor equipment such as cars, trucks, and off road equipment; thorough knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; skill in the use and care of tools, machinery and equipment of the automotive mechanics trade; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to diagnose mechanical difficulties readily; ability to operate micro-computer and/or computer terminal; ability to supervise and instruct skilled mechanics in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to get along with others; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions and to work from diagrams sketches and defective parts; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
A) Graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic; OR
B) Nine (9) years of experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic; OR
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
Special Requirement: Possession of a valid Class B New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
